Airline competition goes local and saves you money

Bargain airlines can’t afford the massive landing and docking fees charged at major international airports in large global cities, but they keep their airfares in check by using secondary airports in or near primary airports, benefiting travelers around the globe.

There are other benefits to using secondary airports besides cheaper airfares. Generally, parking is less costly, there is much less congestion, getting to and from the airport as well as on the runways, meaning timelier flights! Some of the world’s great airports and their smaller sisters include: New York City (La Guardia and Newark, just over the state line in new Jersey); Toronto, with two local airports (Toronto Island and Buttonville) and two nearby in Hamilton and Waterloo, not to mention a 3-hour drive to Detroit where intra-USA flights means cheaper airfares; Rio de Janeiro and Galeao; Boston and state/neighbor Providence; Los Angeles and nearby Orange County and Long Beach; Amsterdam and Rotterdam; Frankfurt and Hahn; Manchester and Liverpool; Orly and Charles De Gaulle; and Brussels and Liege.

International airport options work, too. Flights from Seattle in the USA are often cheaper than airfares from Vancouver in Canada, even though the two cities are in close proximity.
